Hey guys, Donald Ramirez here with TLRC.
Today I want to show you guys proper ways to pressure wash, and the pressure washers we use. The pressure washers we use have several different purposes. Take a look for example at the following example. This person below wants to do a mural on that wall. He wants a steel draw finished, meaning as smooth as possible, and then draw some pretty designs on there.
Now, the retaining wall is made out of cinder block, and cinder block is around seventy years old. There’s a lot of ways to clean these walls, for example, you can come in with a water hose and a wire brush and spend half a day to do it. You can have some electric pressure washers and spend another quarter of a day. Or you can use a high power gas pressure washer like the on we have here with a turbo tip. That pressure washer will clean it the fastest.
What we have here is efflorescence everywhere, and we have moss growing all over the cinder block. There’s so much moss, dirt, and grime that the camera is not going to pick it up. I want this finish to adhere to this retaining wall permanently. Thirty years from now I don’t want to get a call from this person and say, “Hey, ____ some of that plaster you placed on the wall wore off.” The only way that the plaster will stick is if we clean this properly.
We’re going to share with you a couple of machines that will take care of this wall properly. There are about ten or twenty electric machines. Some of them range from 800 psi to 15-18, and they’re okay and work well for a lot of uses. These machines work well for cleaning cars and things like that.
I have a gas powered pressure washer, and that one would do three-thousand psi. And the tip I have on that particular nozzle is a turbo tip. That turbo tip creates a lot of extra force, and what we want to do is etch that wall. Let’s say, for example, the wall was painted. I have a lot of people that have houses that are painted, and they ask me if they should sand blast it our whatever. What I use is a 3,000 psi power washer.
If, for example, the wall is painted, and you’re trying to get, the paint of the power washer will etch it. Then you apply a bonding agent, and that’s good enough when the plaster or the skin coat will adhere.
I’ll show you a little bit of what this machine does. It goes in a circular motion, and all we’re going to do is continue to go here. I’ll start from the top and work my way down where it has efflorescence. I’ll do the best I can, but you’ll notice how it takes off the moss when you do it. By the way people, when you hit the brick you hit it like a fan far away. If you hit it too close, it’ll score the brick, and we don’t want that.
That’s the proper way to do this my friends, or for anyone that contacts me. If you have all this paint all over bricks, rocks, and hard surfaces, and you ask me, “Can you pressure wash this off?” You can, but unless we know there’s lead in that we don’t pressure wash it. Therefore, I suggest you go to Home Depot or Lowe’s and rent a pressure washer that has at least 3,000 psi.
You especially want a pressure washer with that amount of psi because you want to etch the surface of the structures. When you etch that surface, it allows for your next coat to adhere strongly.
- Now that you can pressure wash those walls well I’m going to give you a couple of tips that will help you.
- A gas powered pressure washer has way more psi than an electric pressure washer bar none that I know of.
- Another tip is to use a left and right motion when hitting the blocks while pressure washing them.
- Last thing, wear gloves and goggles when you’re pressure washing because stuff can get into your eyes
- Most importantly, don’t touch the tip. Years back my daughter, Maddy, was washing with the pressure washer, and I told her to not touch the tip. She came back to me real serious asking for the band-aids, and that’s how I knew she touched the tip. People, please understand when you pressure wash with this psi it will take the meat off your fingers all the way to the BONE. So, don’t touch the tip!
Thank you for reading this post, if you found it useful for anyone wanting to remove tough stains from their walls be sure to share this.
